Affirming care is essential — a therapist who is merely tolerant is not the same as one who actively understands LGBTQ+ identity development, minority stress, and the specific concerns of transgender, non-binary, and queer clients. Look for practitioners who explicitly identify as LGBTQ+ affirming and who have worked with your specific concerns.
What to look for: Ask whether the therapist has specific experience with your concerns — coming out, gender dysphoria, relationship structures, family of origin dynamics, or minority stress. Affirmation should be explicit, not assumed.
